Establishment of the “Schmitz GmbH” slaughterhouse and meat processing company by August Schmitz in Essen (Oldenburg); a staff of some ten people slaughters, processes and ships approx. 300 pigs on a daily basis.
The company’s headquarters is transferred to its current location in Lohne, in Oldenburger Münsterland. Here, Schmitz GmbH leases production facilities from Paul Brand Qualitätsfleisch
Extensive renovation measures make it possible to more than double the space available for meat processing. New processing equipment is installed, and Germany’s first carbon dioxide stunning system is put into operation to make the process more humane.
The entire slaughterhouse is rebuilt. A total of 10 million DM is invested, including in the construction of a steam condensation scalding plant. This is the first time such a plant is utilised in a slaughterhouse of this size within Germany.
Schmitz GmbH moves into a new administrative building. In addition, a 400-square-metre washing hall is commissioned for cleaning the insides and outsides of the refrigerated vehicles.
The company becomes a QS Scheme Participant; all its production now takes place in accordance with the specifications of QS Qualität und Sicherheit GmbH.
New automated cold storage facilities are brought online. 10,000 – 12,000 pigs are slaughtered, processed and marketed every week.
Only those pigs originating from QS-certified facilities are purchased and slaughtered. All products, from trimmings to choice cuts, can now be sold as QS goods.
The daughter of the company’s founder, Tina Schmitz, is appointed to the Board of Management. Schmitz GmbH passes the International Food Standard IFS inspection on higher level. In addition, after being examined by the Chinese government, the company becomes one of only four firms in Germany to date to be given permission to supply pork to mainland China.
